There is a very powerful story in Genesis, the story of Abraham believing that he has been called to sacrifice his son, Isaac. In that day human sacrifice was common among the peoples of the world. And we see it continuing in the story of Jesus, which includes a story of a sacrifice of a son, and a belief that this was something that God ordained, rather than something that God used to the highest advantage. At the last moment Abraham, responding to the voice of the angel coming from within himself, withheld the knife and sacrificed a ram caught in a nearby thicket. We see this ram as a symbol of a mind locked in the past—a mind that sees the impulse of the divine through mental structures from out of the past. We are either going to sacrifice those structures or we are going to sacrifice what is symbolically represented here by Isaac. And there was so much of all of Abraham’s life that was tied up in his son.

In the process of interpreting what life has in store for us in terms of mental structures out of the past, there is something that’s sacrificed—probably not nearly so dramatically as sacrificing a firstborn son, but there is something of life and of destiny for any one of us that is sacrificed. There is something of God’s promise to Abraham that is still present with every human being. It wasn’t just unique to him. The seed of what we offer in our life could be prolific and wonderful, creating something that would be a blessing to all the world. Is that not possible for a human life? Is that not possible for us together, with other people? It is possible when we set our destiny free from the box in which we have held it.

There is so much that will come in our life if we are willing to sacrifice our ideas about how it should come. Those ideas, for any of us, are dressed up in clothes of righteousness. They always come that way. For people associated with Emissaries of Divine Light, those ideas could show up as Emissary ideas. That’s how we think of them. But I don’t mean to pick on us, because people around the world are doing the same thing, whatever the religion or philosophy, whatever the pattern of belief, whether it’s secular or sacred. What I want to know is not whether it’s an Emissary idea—is this God’s idea? Is this really what God has in store? For us to know what’s in store for us, from the standpoint of the divine, we have to find a higher place from which we can meet the impulse of spirit on its own terms.

In the Book of Revelation, John talks about turning to see the voice that speaks with him. You do have to turn to clearly receive the impulse at work within you. You have to turn away from what you don’t like about what is happening in the circumstance of your life, and away from your beliefs about how fulfillment should come, to find out what life is trying to bring if you would let it. Later John speaks about a new heaven and a new earth coming down from God out of heaven. When we turn, we get to see what’s coming out of the future into the present. We get to be in the place of knowing that there is something wonderful happening, there is something wonderful manifesting now. When we are, we can say, “I see it. I’m participating in it. I know I have a vital part to play in it. It’s coming through me, as well as everybody else and everything else.”

The body of humanity is currently living in a negative energy field. In that sense, there is a dark cloud, and that dark cloud of negative energy has been generated over millennia. It has been fed by the words and actions of people, born out of all kinds of unwholesome spirits—the spirits of hate and fear and all that is born from them. The residue of all those words and all those actions, all that expression on that basis, is a dark cloud. Unwittingly, people all over the world tend to express themselves from out of that cloud, having received something from it into their experience.

There are people around the world who are celebrating the reality of a different kind of cloud; because while humanity has a legacy that has produced the dark cloud, there is also another kind of legacy, the legacy of our spiritual ancestors, men and women of true integrity down through the ages, who have refused to live out of the human energy field as it has been. There have been people in every generation who have said no, I’m going to make a different choice in my life. I’m going to generate a cloud that carries the positive, creative energy, which is the most real thing about me.

This cloud lets the radiance of who you are be conveyed to the world. People can feel your light and warmth through the generation of this cloud. And they can remember those qualities about themselves. This cloud opens a portal to the invisible radiance at our core and allows what has been invisible and unseen to become seen. You might say that this is our biggest challenge as human beings—to find a way to let the unseen and unheard that is at our core be seen and heard.

As there is spiritual generation personally and collectively, the cloud of glory thickens. And that changes our experience. We know that has powerful and profound implications for our world. We know it changes the people around us as they begin to touch it in us and therefore touch it in themselves. We know that, in that sense, this cloud is contagious, and it invites everyone to take responsibility for contributing to the generation of it. We have the experience that as any group of us cares more about contributing to the collective cloud of glory for all of humanity than we care about our own fulfillment as an isolated human being, we experience something glorious among us.

The personal journey only goes so far, until we see that our fate and our destiny are tied up with a much larger fate and destiny. We find that our own fate and destiny only makes sense in that larger context. And as much as we might try to work it out personally and individually, that attempt keeps us locked into the dark cloud, because in that is self-interest, and in self-interest we get locked into the human state as it has been. We become free as we are investing in our collective future by investing our substance in the cloud of glory that we are generating with other people, and ultimately for all of humanity. Our life becomes easy and fun and joyful when we see that we’re really here to contribute to that larger outworking. That is our freedom and our liberation, and the fulfillment of why we’re here.

It has been my experience that the person extending a blessing experiences as much or more than the one receiving it. When we live in this current of blessing, magical things happen. The human mind can feel that it has lost control. There may even be a desire to slow things down and return to the familiar. The decisions you make in those moments are critical for your creative movement in life. Do you choose to be in the now-here, in what’s real, and welcome the new earth that’s appearing? Or do you try to hold on to what is already in the past?

In this present moment there is a beginning and in this beginning is the Word—the unformed magic of being—and the Word is with God, brought by those who are spiritually present. Who will be the creator in this beginning? Who will create the substance that allows the new heaven to be present so the new earth can appear?

Nobody can bestow a blessing on the earth in the same way you can. No one can bring what is yours to bring. When we bring what is ours to bring together, our individual expression is magnified exponentially. The field we hold together becomes filled with possibility and magic.

Recently I visited a religious retreat center and in the dining room I had my meals underneath a statue of a dying man on a cross. While I respect that this symbol has religious significance to many wonderful people around the world, and in a way that I may not be able to understand, I found it unpleasant to be eating under this representation of one of the most awful forms of execution that humanity has invented. It made me think about the origin of this symbol. It is a remarkable feat that the Roman Empire, which crucified Jesus, claimed that its church was the authoritative proponent of his teachings and that the crucifixion it carried out was God’s will. As I gazed upon the crucifix, it seemed to me that the Roman Empire had a conflict of interest when it came to that view.

Whenever spiritual vision has been brought, the surrounding culture has swallowed it up. The amazing clarity that Jesus brought was greatly misunderstood by almost all the disciples closest to him and by those who came immediately after him. So it wasn’t only the Romans who covered over who he was and what he brought. Today, many people turn Jesus into a religious icon. They adulate him and call him Savior for having been crucified for humanity’s sins. Many more dismiss him as a fabrication of religion. Either way, the result is that the reality he brought has been almost entirely covered over, largely unavailable and inaccessible to people now. Like other spiritual visionaries, Jesus brought the most central factor in human experience, which has been symbolized by the sun. He is a salient example of how difficult it is to bring true orientation into the human experience, and how quickly that orientation gets covered over.

So what is most central for you in your life and for our life together? What deserves to stand at the middle of it? What deserves to be the reference point for our life, for our work, for our thoughts and for our feelings?

Our thoughts and our feeling and our capacity to move energy—and we do have tremendous capacity to move energy, for better or for worse, I notice—were created to build a sun, so that in our midst there is that which is most central, that which is radiant, which brings warmth and gravity and light to our world. I believe that if some number of us did this, it would have profound impact. It would be life-changing and world-changing. And there’s nothing this planet needs more than people who are being and building a sun.

People notice as we do this work, because there is a spiritual technology that connects all people around the world. When people do this work, it’s as if the town crier was walking through human consciousness. We share a collective field of consciousness around the world. And when the sun is out, it is inviting sun-beings from all four corners of this creative field to come together and build a sun.
